More than 600 people will participate in the 8th annual Muskoka Rocks Road Race held July 31 in Minett, in support of Camp Oochigeas a camp near Rosseau for children living with cancer.
Since 1984, Camp Oochigeas has been providing kids with cancer and kids affected by childhood cancer a unique opportunity for growth through challenging, fun, enriching and magical experiences.
“The event has really grown from the first year that Liz and I held it,” says Laurel Brooks who, with Lynn Keane, founded and organizes the Muskoka Rocks Road Race.
It now features a 10-kilometre run, a five-kilometre run/walk and a one-kilometre kids’ run. Just seven years ago, the first ever Muskoka Rocks Road Race drew 170 participants and raised $25,000. “We really like that it has brought people together as a community event.”
Both cottagers and year-round residents take part and last year some participants came from as far away as Ireland and Scotland.
“It is a cottage tradition for some,” she says. “We like that it draws in families.”
Over the past 7 years, the Muskoka Rocks Road Race has raised an amazing $265,000 for Camp Oochigeas!
